Growing up and living in predominantly rural and regional areas, her connection to landscape is an inherent component of her artwork. This exhibition continues the artist’s exploration of connections between the landscape and memory and how the colours and textures of a place can hold, heal, or hinder memory.

 

This exhibition consists of a large-scale installation of naturally dyed wool, silk thread and beeswax alongside ceramic vessels. The work communicates lived experiences of a child within a landscape marred by trauma. In both bodies of work varied surfaces emphasise the contrasting temporality of certain memories, some inseparable from the landscape in which they were formed.

Don’t get too comfortable escapes into a realm of imagination. There are recurring motifs: volcanoes, tents, rodeo bulls, zoos, wild animals, nature – cultured and wild, the topsy-turvy space of the picture plane. Despite its clear escapism, this imagery presents as metaphor, and speaks to experiences we all face in our lives and relationships. 

Matthew and Caroline Cheyne work from their house and studio on the outskirts of Ipswich. There, domestic life and art exist almost without separation. Art in progress can be seen from the kitchen table, and this is often where it is discussed, alongside other important events and occurrences of daily life.

From November 2024, Ipswich Art Gallery will host four significant works from the National Gallery of Australia’s collection. The Sharing the National Collection initiative, funded under Australia’s National Cultural Policy Revive,&nbsp;enables major works of art to be exhibited outside the nation’s capital. 





Ipswich Art Gallery will feature powerhouse American artists Mark Rothko (1903-1970) and Agnes Martin (1912-2004), both exponents of international abstraction. &nbsp;Works by renowned former Ipswich ceramicist, Gwyn Hanssen-Pigott (1935-2013) will also complement those held in the Ipswich Art Gallery collection.





Agnes Martin is known for her minimalist and serene abstract paintings characterised by grids, lines, and subtle colour variations. Her work often evokes a sense of tranquillity and introspection. Mark Rothko is renowned for his large-scale colour field paintings that explore the emotional and spiritual aspects of colour through expansive, immersive canvases. Both Martin and Rothko created work that asks us to spend time contemplating their subtle form and colour. Australian artist Gwyn Hanssen-Pigott is regarded as one of the world’s greatest contemporary potters. Deeply influenced by the quiet still-life paintings of Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964), Hanssen-Pigott leaves behind a body of exquisite still-life assemblages of refined, spare vessels in subtle colours and shapes.





These important works promise to captivate and delight with their profound beauty and sensitivity.

Applications are now open for Artist Residencies and Workshops & Meetups. Ipswich Art Workshop is an accessible and welcoming multi-use, hands-on workspace, open to supporting a variety of arts-based initiatives.
