Delve into the expressive potential of gouache painting with Dylan Jones!
Explore a unique side of yourself in this introductory painting workshop, led by painter Dylan Jones.
Dylan will guide participants through the basics of painting self-portraits using gouache - a versatile, often overlooked water-based medium celebrated for its rich opacity and matte finish. Perfect for those new to painting, the session highlights gouache’s unique qualities, including its immediacy, adaptability, and expressive potential.
Be inspired by Dylan's gestural and energetic mark making and discover a new facet of one's reflection.
Through step-by-step instruction, participants will delve into basic colour mixing and experience the benefits of working from their own likeness using a mirror. By the end of the workshop, attendees will complete an original self-portrait on high quality paper and gain an understanding of fundamental gouache painting techniques.
Skill level: This workshop is suitable for beginners.
What to wear: Please wear closed-in shoes and workshop-friendly clothing. BYO Apron should you require it.

Dylan Jones
Dylan Jones' artworks vary in subject matter and medium but regardless of what he chooses to depict there always remains an interest in colour, composition and the simplification of form. The imagery Dylan creates has a relationship to the history of art but more so to everyday life. Working from memory and with models in the studio, Dylan’s practice is inspired by a variety of people and places, all rendered with gestural and energetic marks.
Dylan Jones' art has been exhibited widely across Australia, and included as a finalist in several notable art prizes including the Brisbane Portrait Prize, Mosman Art Prize, Fisher Ghost Art Award, and Waverley Art Prize.
