Join artist Deb Mostert to explore the creative habit of everyday sketching!

Delve into the daily exercise of observational drawing in this hands-on masterclass, drawn from Deb Mostert's decades-long sketchbook practice. Participants will experiment with diverse materials, from ink to pastel, and be guided through a series of fun drawing exercises.

From capturing the ordinary to the unusual, this workshop will support your ability to get a creative habit going and stay observant and present.

This masterclass is inspired by Merric Boyd's vibrant drawings, on display in Fantastic Forms at Ipswich Art Gallery. Boyd's frenzied, colourful and dynamic sketchbooks are filled with an abundance of imagery, drawn from his everyday surroundings and life in regional Victoria.

As Deb Mostert observes, sketchbooks are "Just for us, a safe space with no pressure to perform, a place to relax, a window into our thoughts and dreams and a visible record of a life observed, to be thumbed back through in times of creative drought.”

Skill level: This workshop is suitable for beginners.

What to wear: Please wear closed-in shoes and workshop-friendly clothing. BYO Apron should you require it.

Materials: All Materials are provided. Participants are welcome to bring their own sketchbooks.

Deb Mostert

Deb Mostert is a mid-career artists, working across three decades in drawing, painting, sculpture and public art. Deb’s practice has been grounded in observational drawing, and has revolved around objects as metaphors, collections as carriers of our stories and museums as repositories of our collective archives.

She holds a Bachelor of Fine Art from Queensland College of Art and has had 23 solo shows and been involved in more than 80 group shows in both regional and commercial galleries. She has won several awards and been a finalist in many National art prizes including the Bale Painting Prize, the Salon de Refuses, Jacaranda Drawing Prize, and Marie Ellis Prize for Drawing.

Deb works backwards and forwards across drawing, painting and sculpture to have conversations that are meaningful, and offers the practice of keeping a sketchbook and mindful observation as a quiet antidote to distraction.
